This is what I get for posting melancholy Romantic poetry...
Unlike Wordsworth, I don't believe in an idyllic state of nature that man has somehow screwed up. I think that man combines a self-absorbed cruelty with an almost boundless capacity for compassion, and it is when the former outweighs the latter that we see the senseless suffering and harm to others, to the environment, and to ourselves that so pervades the world. Really, I can't define what "man has made of man," only that it alternately profoundly disturbs and indescribably elates me.
